Art Basel Miami Beach concluded on December 8 with more news than the astounding sale of Maurizio Cattelan’s artwork of an actual banana duct-taped to the wall. The anchor of many satellite fairs and exhibits during Miami art week saw 81,000 attendees alone and introduced Meridians, a sector dedicated to large-scale works. It was nice to see a bunch of familiar faces from the Hamptons at the fairs. Eric Firestone Gallery showed geometric works by former East Hampton resident Miriam Schapiro in Basel’s Survey sector, while sculptures by Water Mill Center founder and artistic director Robert Wilson were displayed at Design Miami. Montauk’s Surf Lodge also popped up at W South Beach for a slew of events including a dinner and after party for ARTnews with guest-editor Swizz Beatz, Rosario Dawson and Olivia Culpo.
