ILLUSTRIOUS GIN LANE
Clean, crisp and utterly divine, an estate that is as perfect as this comes along only in a few lifetimes. It should be called “Heaven on Earth” and you should take the time to explore every nook and cranny of it.
An entire oeuvre of articles written about estates doesn’t begin to address the comfortable perfection of this address on Gin Lane, no doubt the most prominent street in all the Hamptons, akin to living on Park Avenue. Early in Hampton history, a local doctor named Gaillard Thomas bought two parcels of land in 1882 on the oceanfront for a little over $1,000 – and as we know – the rest is history-making stuff. Furthermore, lest you think that Prohibition era bootleggers named Gin Lane, or perhaps the good doctor, rest easy knowing that “gin” is a word in Old English describing common grazing areas for cattle that were pastured so as not to invade farm land in the 1651 timeframe of the old South Fork.
Just ask Hamptons top real estate luxury broker, Tim Davis of Corcoran Group Real Estate, a lifelong resident of the Hamptons and listing agent for the property. “Outside amongst the 2.2 acres of this beautifully landscaped property, you will find a tennis pavilion, tennis court and ocean beaches within a short distance, but not one grazing cow,” explained Tim. “Located along Gin Lane and set back behind tall privet hedges is this wonderful estate section oasis. A sprawling floor plan makes for luxurious seaside living and generous accommodations for family, friends and entertaining.”
Multimillion-dollar mansions and waterfront real estate are what initially attracted New York’s “it” crowd to the area. But like the village itself, Southampton homes offer something for everyone. This elegant estate home for example, has key features. Tim explained that: “The floor plan is quite ideal; living on a one level home unfolds in a way that allows it to be used by a couple, family, or extended family. With separate wings, the approximately 7,000 feet of the home allows the footprint to grow if desired. The nine bedrooms and master bedroom with fireplace are all ensuite. There are 10.5 bathrooms located on separate wings affording great privacy for family and guests.”
The double height living room with a fireplace, features extraordinary windows that remind one of spinnakers in full sail. Access to the large limestone terrace and the outdoor shower is a nice addition. In fact, all the rooms have access to the swimming pool and terraces. The fireplace library, the media room, the formal dining room and the office complete with its own full bath, look out at the large 60 x 20 heated swimming pool, spa, and fire pit. A limestone courtyard terrace leading to the pool and tennis recreation area is also reachable through the more than spectacularly large eat-in kitchen.
Private guests’ quarters and a sprawling floor plan allow for privacy and outdoor access. The estate exudes a sense of stately elegance as well as a feeling of winter and fall weekend coziness. This would be a place that even Dr. Thomas would relish living in.
