Designer Spotlight: Boris Baranovich Architects
For nearly 40 years, Boris Baranovich has been the principal of his namesake architecture firm that originated in New York City and currently operates from its office in Sag Harbor. The winner of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s Arthur Ross Award’s work has been featured in publications from AD to Vanity Fair. Here, he shares insight about his design for a home at 540 Halsey Neck Lane in Southampton.
What was your direction in collaborating with the original home owner?
“The home is designed for summer use, especially entertaining. There are multiple guestrooms; a formal living room, dining room and library; spacious pool house with indoor/outdoor flow to enjoy the summer weather, and a fully finished basement with media and billiards rooms. The site is also ideal for gardeners and owners who would like to be ambitious with landscaping.”
How would you describe your niche?
“Most of our work is traditional, whether apartments in Manhattan or homes in Europe, Florida and the Hamptons. But it’s more contemporary in the sense that people want cleaner, simpler architecture as they edit their lives to accommodate multiple residences and being empty nesters.”
How would you summarize this property’s aesthetic qualities?
“It’s Georgian shingle meets Hamptons with country elements like wide-plank red oak floors, architectural details with woodwork and ample exterior terraces.”
