Labor Day weekend checklist, Davis-family style.
“Get outside early. Spend time on the water. Pick up local corn, tomatoes and seafood. Have a long lunch with family and friends. Watch the sunset. And most importantly, don’t overschedule it. Sometimes the best Hamptons weekend is simply enjoying being here.”
Looking back at my summer highlights.
“This summer reminded me why I love this place. It was a summer of sharing life on the East End with my grandchildren for 3 ½ weeks. We enjoyed plenty of great local food and catching our own on a charter in Montauk. Other activities were a Yankee game, crabbing, swimming, boating, Pridwin’s BBQ, Minnow’s outdoor dining, the golf club’s family night, sleeping under the stars, eel traps, Coopers Beach, Bilboquet, pizza, ‘Poppy’s ice-cream truck,’ and so much more. Making time to be a kid again was the best part of summer for me. I also relearn every summer that despite how the Hamptons evolve, the ocean, light, landscape and lifestyle remain timeless.”
Top 3 reasons why you should stick around the Hamptons in September.
- The weather. September often gives us some of the year’s best beach days, with warm water and beautiful evenings.
- The pace. The roads quiet down, restaurants become easier and spontaneity returns.
- The light. September light in the Hamptons is extraordinary. The mornings are crisp, the sunsets spectacular and you begin to feel fall arriving.

“Sometimes my favorite sunset spot is simply the end of my dock, the beach or the back of a boat. If I’m looking for more activity, Wölffer Wine Stand is a classic Sagaponack sunset experience, while Montauk offers plenty of options for dinner and live music. Sag Harbor is another favorite: A walk along the waterfront at sunset followed by dinner is hard to beat. I’ve watched thousands of Hamptons sunsets, and they are all different and still get my attention.”
