Since people are always asking me about real estate and lifestyle matters, we introduced a light and fun monthly Q&A about all sorts of topics.
My thoughts on renting vs. owning a boat.
“I have owned various boats for most of my life. When my children were no longer living at home and we weren’t using the boat as much, my yacht broker son suggested that I sell my last boat. Joining Barton & Gray Mariners Club has been a life-changing experience, since I’m able to enjoy our region’s waterways on the finest built vessels. They operate out of ports throughout the East End and up and down the East Coast, including Newport R.I. (As many of you know, I also have a home in Newport, where I love to spend time with my four grandchildren, my son and his wife.”
What advice would you give someone visiting the Hamptons for the first time?
“Spend a couple of weeks at a home base and then take separate days exploring the various villages, beaches, bays and cultural experiences. You will find the location that most resonates with your soul, and it will find you.”
Is August slow for home searches, or is it an important time for uptick in interest in listing and buying homes?
“August is a solid month for viewing properties. I often advise sellers to list their home in early to mid-August to capture summer tenants and visitors and take advantage of that window of time before everyone heads back to their daily lives in September with the distractions of children, family, work projects and holidays. Don’t wait until fall.”
My go-to stores and services for necessities from groceries to entertaining.
“The farm stands on the East End have an abundance of fresh produce, and the local tomatoes are just starting to pour in. My wife has a special spot for heirlooms, which truly are the best in the region. For quality prepared foods, we like Loaves and Fishes, Round Swamp Farm, SALT, L & W Market, the Clamman, Catena’s, Amber Waves Farm and the Sagaponack General Store. If you need catering on a small or large scale for events, backyard family barbecues and beach parties, my brother Keith and the Golden Pear do a superb job of serving high-quality food with a beautiful presentation.”
My August agenda.
“In the midst of some beautiful weather, house showings, contract signings, enjoying Barton & Gray boats, dining at Duryea’s Orient and Minnow, and sunset dinners at home, I’m focused on our grandchildren coming to town on the 8th for a week.”
