One of the most finely proportioned and gracefully treated houses in Southampton is the one that Judge Monson built for himself in 1898. He purchased 17 acres of land originally, and then began construction of a Dutch Colonial shingled “cottage” estate complete with putting green, tennis court, swimming pool, and thoroughbred stables. His heirs sold the property and home in 1904 to the Carnegie family who owned it until 1932. Following several other owners, renowned interior designer Joanne de Guardiola, and husband Roberto bought the now 4.6 acre property in 1994. De Guardiola’s objective was to tie together all the diverse elements of the house and produce a better framework for those they wanted to keep. Extensive reconstruction and additions to the three-story house resulted in a stunning new kitchen, six added new bedrooms and several covered terraces. Add to this the refurbishing of the original fir wood main floors, new windows throughout, and the addition of a 30-foot long butler’s pantry with custom cabinetry, wine storage cellar just off the pantry, and a movie theater seating 20 adjacent to it. New black cedar exterior shingles were then placed to follow the original black cedar of the house. Outdoors, the judge’s original stables have been converted to an entertainment/party area adjacent to the new 50-foot heated Gunite pool and new Har True tennis court. A new multi-zone irrigation system was installed along with new raised upper patios showing off a Tortorella lily pond. 100-year old hydrangeas and privet hedges were moved and realigned throughout the property. Old driveways were taken out and replaced and new custom electric gates have been installed. A new stand-alone three-car garage building was added with a covered porch alongside an elegant front porte cochère – having removed the old carriage garage. “This estate is ideal for a family who wishes to maintain the integrity and history of a home, yet at the same time wants to enjoy the modern, sophisticated lifestyles of today’s era,” says Tim Davis.
